When does Bones and Coins save?

In a September 7 Steam reply, developer troydgames explained that the game saves when the application closes. A PC crash can prevent that normal shutdown. The reply did not provide a recovery method for the lost session.

Use the game’s normal exit when you finish playing. This follows the developer’s explanation; it is not a guarantee against data loss. The reply does not specify every possible save trigger or an autosave interval.

Progress lost after a crash

  1. Note which version you were playing: Steam full game, Steam demo, or itch.io prototype.
  2. Record what happened before the loss: game crash, PC crash, forced shutdown, or a normal exit.
  3. Avoid starting a new game or deleting local files while trying to recover an existing run.
  4. Check the developer’s latest announcements and report the version, shutdown event and approximate amount of lost progress in the Steam discussion linked below.

These are troubleshooting steps, not a confirmed recovery procedure. We have not verified a backup restore process or save-file path. Do not copy a directory from a different game or version.

Does v1.0.1 fix lost saves?

The developer’s v1.0.1 announcement is titled “Save System & Ultra Wide Screen Fixes”. Its listed changes address the resource display on ultrawide screens in the upgrade scene, and display/video settings corruption when starting a new game.

Those notes do not confirm recovery of lost progress or a fix for progress lost after a PC crash. Check the actual changes rather than assuming the title means every save problem is resolved.

Does Demo progress transfer to the full game?

No for the September 2026 release transition. On September 3, the developer said the older Demo’s progress would not transfer because the gameplay systems had changed. Why did my old Demo save reset?

In a separate September 6 reply, the developer explained that an earlier Demo update refreshed save data after changes to the Skill Tree and other systems. This explains that particular Demo update, not every case of lost progress. Developer’s Demo save reply.

Where is the save file located?

A verified save-file location is not available in the sources checked for this guide. The Steam “save data location” question had no answer when reviewed. The old Demo does not transfer to the September full release, as explained above. Prototype save compatibility remains unverified.
